The Serrano Pepper (Capsicum annuum) is one of the most popular fresh peppers in Mexico. Its name comes from its origin in the "Sierras" (mountainous regions) of Puebla and Hidalgo, where it is a staple of daily cooking.
The Serrano is considerably spicier than its cousin, the Jalapeño. It is classified as "Hot" (medium-high), with a heat level typically ranging between 10,000 to 25,000 Scoville Units (SHU). Its heat is fast and biting, providing a kick that spicy food lovers appreciate in fresh dishes.
The fruits are small, 6 to 10 cm long, with a thin, conical shape. They are typically consumed green as a key ingredient in fresh salsas like Pico de Gallo. When ripe (red), they are popular in Guacamole. Their thick flesh makes them best enjoyed fresh rather than dried.
The Serrano plant is highly productive. It is the perfect choice for customers who find the Jalapeño too mild but aren't ready for the intensity of the Habaneros in our shop.
