The Naga Bhut Jolokia, globally known as the Ghost Pepper, is a living legend in the super hot universe. Native to Northeast India, it was the first pepper to break the 1 million SHU barrier.
The name "Bhut Jolokia" translates to "ghost pepper", a name that captures its nature: the intense heat sets in insidiously and lasts long. In 2007, it reached over 1,300,000 Scoville Units (SHU). Although surpassed, it remains a nuclear pepper staple.
Bhut Jolokia offers a sweet and fruity profile with a slightly smoky aftertaste. The fruits are intense red and deeply wrinkled. It is a classic choice for Indian sauces and chutneys, but should be used with great moderation.
Its potency is such that it has been used in India for smoke grenades. Handling this pepper requires extreme caution: gloves are recommended, and avoid inhaling its dust due to extreme capsaicin levels.
