The Black Russian Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is an ancient (heirloom) variety of tall and indeterminate growth. It originates from the Crimean Peninsula (Crimea), on the coast of the Black Sea, the region for which it was named. This variety is valued not only for its exotic beauty but mainly for its superior gustatory quality, being one of the most popular black tomatoes in the world.
The strength of the Black Russian is its flavor profile, which is considered rich, intense, and perfectly balanced. It is a tomato with low acidity and high fructose content, which gives it a striking sweetness and a salty or slightly spicy touch that sets it apart from common red tomatoes. Its pulp is dense, fleshy, and juicy, ideal for fresh consumption.
This tomato is visually impressive. The fruits are bulky, round and slightly flattened in shape, reaching between 150g to 500g. Its ripening color is its most distinctive feature: the skin and pulp present deep shades ranging from dark red, deep purple, and chocolate black, especially on the shoulders of the fruit when exposed to the sun.
Due to its fleshy texture and complex flavor, the Noire de Crimée Tomato is best enjoyed raw. It is highly recommended for:
