The Tondo Calabrese Pepper (Capsicum annuum) is a traditional variety from the Calabria region of southern Italy. It produces small, round, cherry-like fruits with thick flesh and a well-balanced heat. It is one of the most popular peppers in Italian cuisine, especially for pickling, antipasti and stuffed peppers.
Tondo Calabrese is considered a moderately hot pepper, typically ranging between 15,000 and 20,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). Its heat is noticeable but balanced by the slightly sweet flesh, making it an excellent choice for everyday cooking.
The fruits are small, round and slightly flattened, measuring around 3 to 5 cm in diameter. They ripen from green to a bright glossy red. Their thick, firm flesh makes them ideal for stuffing with cheese, tuna or cured meats, as well as for pickling in oil or vinegar. They are also delicious fresh, grilled or roasted.
The plant has a compact, vigorous growth habit and typically reaches 50 to 80 cm in height. It produces abundant crops throughout the growing season and is also highly ornamental thanks to its bright red fruits.
