The Red Tiger is a color variant of the Pink Tiger pepper, which in turn is a spectacular cross between the Bhut Jolokia (Ghost Pepper) and the Pimenta de Neyde. It is a pepper of the species Capsicum chinense, valued both for its vibrant color and ornamental foliage and for its intense heat.
Degree of Pungency (Very Strong): The Red Tiger is an accessible Super Hot pepper, situated at a substantial spicy level, but below "nuclear" peppers like the Reaper. Its average heat ranges between 300,000 and 500,000 Scoville Units (SHU). This level provides a strong and lasting heat, typical of Chinense, but with a less aggressive burn than the Moruga Scorpion or Carolina Reaper.
Citrus and Fruity Flavor: The flavor is one of its most notable qualities. It is intensely fruity and citrusy, with notes of tropical fruits and an underlying floral touch (characteristic of Bhut Jolokia). The flavor is clean and sweet before the heat reaches its peak.
Shape and Color: The fruits are typically elongated and conical, with a slightly wrinkled surface. They mature from a dark purple or black tone to a vibrant and bright red, sometimes maintaining dark stripes or spots inherited from Pimenta de Neyde during the transition.
Plant Appearance: The plant is ornamental, featuring dark foliage (green and dark purple) and robust growth, making it a stunning addition to any garden or balcony.
Use: Its excellent balance between fruity flavor and strong heat makes it very versatile in the kitchen. It is fantastic for creating red fruit hot sauces, jellies and chutneys. Its flavor pairs well with white meats, fish, and Asian cuisine.
