The Orange Peppadew (or Orange Sweet Piquanté) is a designer pepper originating from South Africa. It is world-famous for its crunchy texture and sweet-and-sour flavor, often consumed pickled.
Another interesting fact is that it grows upwards, rather than downwards as is traditional for peppers of this size.
Heat Level (Very Low/Mild): It is considered a very mild pepper, usually with a heat level that is barely noticeable. The typical heat ranges between 1,000 to 2,000 Scoville Units (SHU) in its fresh state.
Complex Sweet-and-Sour Flavor: The flavor profile is its main highlight: it is a fusion of sweet, acidic (tangy), and fruity. It has a cleaner flavor than many pickled peppers, with a mild acidity reminiscent of a cherry tomato, but with the crunch of a bell pepper.
Characteristics: The fruits are small, round, and uniform, with thick walls and a bright orange color when ripe. Its firm and crunchy texture remains even after harvesting and processing.
Culinary Use: Perfect where flavor and texture are more important than heat: Appetizers and Antipasti (often stuffed with cream cheese), Salads, Sandwiches, and Pizza Toppings.
