The Carolina Reaper is a hybrid pepper of the chinense species, originally called "HP22B", created by cultivator Ed Currie, who runs the PuckerButt Pepper Company in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Since 2013, it has been considered by Guinness World Records as the hottest pepper in the world, reaching peaks of 2,200,000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units). It is a cross between a Pakistani Naga and a Red Habanero from the island of St. Vincent. It has a fruity, sweet flavour with a hint of cinnamon and chocolate undertones, before the nuclear heat sets in.
